An Alert to Our Guests Concerning Harassment and Impersonation

On November 5, 2007, a channel guest, T a l a m a n, was banned from #bbw. Beginning three days later, this person parked himself on Undernet to "hold" some of the nicknames from #bbw.

Since there is no nickname registration on Undernet, the purpose here is to provide information on how you may verify the true identity of the nicknames T a l a m a n may be using on Undernet.

The EASIEST way to identify the impersonator is by his IP address in his /whois. If you /whois Babra, bootsy, Y_, pixiearro, Cindee, Countryboy, curlyman or Ralf and there is a "ca.charter.com" address in the address, he is the impersonator.

For example, if you "/whois Babra", this is the return if it's the real Babra:

The part of the /whois shown in blue are portions the impersonator cannot duplicate and the part that should always be checked if you want to be sure you're chatting to the right person. The blue portions indicate a registered "username" and only the true owners of the username can use this information. Also note you won't see Babra, bootsy, or pixiearro in any channel other than #bbw.

Here is how the impersonator's /whois would look:

Babra is kris@66-215-121-58.dhcp.mrba.ca.charter.com * [info in this area changes according to who he's impersonating]

Note the "ca.charter.com" portion of the address and the channel.

Here is a list of some of the nicknames being "held", along with the correct /whois information. Portions that may vary or can be changed by anyone to "impersonate" someone have been replaced with "zz's".

Note: T a l a m a n doesn't hold all of these nicknames at the same time, although he normally holds anywhere from two to five nicknames simultaneously.
