How to Register a Username

You can't register a nickname on Undernet, but you can register a username. In selecting a username, it does not have to be your nickname; it is completely independent of your nickname.

Registering a username provides you with three advantages:

  1. With a registered username, you will have access to channels set to a +r mode, which will only allow registered usernames to access the channel.

  2. You can mask your address when you login to X with your username and password. Consider the two examples if someone did a /whois on Suzie.
    Suzie is bzzz@123-456.Dial1.Houston1.Level3.net

    Suzie is bzzz@busybee.users.undernet.org
You can see that the first whois gives more information about Suzie. You can see that Suzie is from Texas and from somewhere in the Houston area (or, at least, her ISP is located there). In the second example, busybee is Suzie's registered username and you would not have any idea where Suzie is from. (Unless you knew Suzie like I knew Suzie... Uh, nevermind. Just an old song.) :)

Note: You can still use your registered username without masking your address. If Suzie wanted others to see she was from Houston, Texas and also wanted to show she has a registered username, she would login to X, but not use the /mode command to mask her IP. This is what a logged in, but not masked /whois of Suzie would look like:
    Suzie is bzzz@123-456.Dial1.Houston1.Level3.net
    Suzie is on #bbw
Suzie is using *.undernet.org The Undernet Underworld
Suzie is logged in as busybee
  3. And last, but not least, by being logged in with your username, others will be certain you are who you say you are. Since nicknames cannot be registered, others can use your normal nickname. By being logged in, there will less confusion of your identity.
In order to register a username, you must have a valid and non-free e-mail address. This means using the e-mail address you got when you signed up with your internet provider, or some other acceptable e-mail address. Cservice will not accept e-mail address from places like hotmail.com or yahoo.com, etc. This is to help the system be more secure. It's better for you and for everyone.
